Aston Villa Ladies 3 London Bees 3

Injury time goal denies Villa win

An injury time equaliser saw Villa share the points in a thrilling match at The Lamb on Sunday, the goal initially being credited to former Villain Katie Wilkinson before the match video confirmed it as an own-goal.

Villa went into the game on a run of only one defeat in five matches and looking to kick on in the second half of the season, however things looked grim after the visitors scored two goals with probably their only two chances in the first half.

With the hosts starting brightly, Bees keeper Nicola Hobbs twice pulled off saves in the first 15 minutes from Beth Merrick before denying Ebony Salmon when the young striker was clean through. The Villains pulled a goal back 10 minutes before half-time with Salmon turning in Aoife Hurley's cross at the near post.

The second half started strongly for Villa and their second goal came after more good work from Merrick who set up Salmon for her second of the match. With 16 minutes to go Elisha N'Dow met a Merrick free-kick in the box to head Villa into the lead with Hobbs in the Bees goal getting injured in the process and having to be substituted.

But the drama was not over, deep into injury time, Bees won a corner and with Villa keeper Sian Rogers under pressure from the Bees centre back, the ball dropped over the line. Despite protests from the Villa camp on what appeared to be a foul, the goal stood and the match ended 3-3.

Aston Villa goal scorer Ebony Salmon

“We did well to get back into the game and get back to 3-2 but a last minute goal is very hard to take.

“I think we did well to come back but we've just got to push on now and start winning games because we can't keep giving points away like that.

“We felt a bit hard done by to be 2-0 down but we were only 2-0 down by our own mistakes, we gave them two easy goals and made it harder for ourselves.

“As a striker, you just want to score goals and obviously I'm glad to keep scoring but as a whole performance you want to win, I don't just want to score I want to be winning games.

“I think I should have had a hat-trick. There were a few chances that I missed but I've just got to keep working on it."
