Big win for Villa!
Aston Villa Ladies kick started their league campaign with a home win against Watford on Sunday. Villa started strongly and after 2 minutes, Beth Merrick scored her first of the season which set the tone for a commanding Villa performance. The home side continued to dominate the match so it was against the run of play that Watford had an opportunity to equalise in the 12th minute but the chance went wide from close in.
Ebony Salmon doubled the home side's advantage on 23 minutes with her second in as many games after outpacing the Watford defence to slot home. Watford again had a chance to reduce the deficit with a 25-yard free-kick coming back off the bar but it was Villa who extended their lead with Chloe Jones heading home early in the second half from a Merrick free-kick. It was Merrick who scored the 4th to complete the rout, curling home a free-kick after a foul on Salmon which did look inside the box!
Aston Villa striker Beth Merrick said:
“Getting ourselves off the mark early in games is something we’ve been working on.
“We’ve been conceding early goals so we knew we had to get on the front foot; that was the aim today and it was great to score in the first two minutes.
“That boosted confidence, which has been lacking a bit in previous games, and set us up to go for more goals.
“With no points and only one goal in the league before today it was crucial not just to win the game but to score as many times as we could.
“So that was very pleasing for the team, and for me personally it was great to get on the scoresheet for the first time this season.
“I got 10 goals last season, but then I got injured during the Spring Series and haven’t been able to hit a barn door since – hopefully I’m on my way now.”
