Aston Villa Ladies F.C. WSL Announcement
Villa Ladies granted WSL2 Licence for 2018/19 Season
Aston Villa Ladies are set to play in Tier 2 of WSL following a successful application to the FA.
The FA announced a restructure of the women’s game earlier this year which will result in a professional Women’s Super League and a second division which is classed as ‘Semi-Professional’.
During the last two years Aston Villa Ladies has undergone considerable change, both with the first team management but also structurally within the Football Club.
Work has taken place to ensure that women’s football is embedded within the club and every effort is being made to raise the profile of Aston Villa Ladies and to professionalise the programme across all areas.
In partnership with Aston Villa Foundation, a Female Football Strategy is currently being developed which will ensure that a clear plan is in place across all areas to support the development of female football, including player development - creating pathways from Foundation programmes through to the Girls FA Regional Talent Club into the Ladies programme.
In addition, the match-day experience with the focus on increasing the fan base is currently being reviewed with announcements to be made in early 2018 as plans are being made for next season.
Keith Wyness, Chief Executive, said: “The Ladies programme, like a lot of departments within the Football Club, has undergone a lot of change over the last few years, so applying for Tier 2 at this stage was the sensible option.
“That way, we can focus on developing the game at a realistic pace and allows the club to progress in the future due to performances on the pitch.
“Aston Villa is full committed to being an inclusive club and the support for the Ladies programme is a vital part of this.”
