Familiar Fan Helps Haywood Net FA Cup Winner
Sophie Haywood revealed her dad deserved some credit for her goal against Stoke City in the fourth round.
As Aston Villa poured forward in search of a winner in the FA Cup fourth round, Sophie Haywood heard a familiar voice from behind her.
The winger was in the right place at the right time to tap home the rebound after Jodie Hutton’s shot had been parried across the face of the goal.
And after the game, Haywood revealed that her dad, Stan, deserved some credit for sending Villa through to the fifth round.
She said: “I didn’t really have to do much! Jodie was having a lot of luck down her wing when she came on, she had the beating of her players and I knew she’d have a shot.
“I’ve got to give a bit of credit to my dad because he kept shouting at me to follow it in. I just followed it in and it was a tap in for me.
“He was shouting ‘go on Twiggy!’. With him being that close to the pitch, I couldn’t avoid hearing him.”
Stoke provided a tough test in windswept Staffordshire as the National League side set about causing a cup upset, and Haywood was relieved to make it through.
She said: “It was a very tough game – we expected that in tough conditions. Stoke got the better of us in the first 15 minutes but we grew into the game and deserved the win in the end.”
Sheffield United now stand in the way of Villa and a place in the quarter finals, a team that Haywood and her teammates know all about.
The winger netted in a 5-1 thrashing of the Blades in December, and she’s hoping for more of the same on Sunday.
She said: “Every time we play them it’s a tough game. The last game we played against them we were successful and hopefully we can replicate that.”
