Jones: Villa Will Never Give Up
Chloe Jones praised the team's mettle for coming back from a daunting situation against Sheffield FC Ladies on Sunday
Chloe Jones was proud of the way Aston Villa Ladies went down fighting against Sheffield FC Ladies on the season’s final day on Sunday.
Trailing 4-1 at half-time to their visitors, Villa came out with fight, passion and endeavour as they pulled two goals back before striking the post in a thrilling finale.
Captain Jones, who played the final game of her career, had hopes of a comeback victory to mirror the final game of the 2016/17 season when they came back from 4-1 down to beat Durham.
She said: “It was a dream start for us, a perfect start – and it was nice to get an assist with the corner.
“We could have been leading in the first half but we made some silly mistakes and that’s been the story of our season.
“We had a chat at half-time and the Durham comeback when we won 5-4 was mentioned. We were determined and no Villa team will ever give up.
“These girls are full of character and we kept believing until the final whistle that we could turn this one around.”
It was an emotional afternoon for the 29-year-old, who was given a guard of honour as she walked out with her nephew in her arms.
Jones was also presented with a framed shirt, flowers and the Players’ Player of the Year award as she went out on a high – believing that it’s the right time to pass the baton over to some of Villa’s youngsters.
She said: “I’ll miss being part of this very much but now it’s a time for the younger players to take the club forward.”
A reminder that Aston Villa Ladies will be playing their home games at Boldmere St Michaels FC in the 2017/18 season.
