Jones: We'll Bounce Back
Chloe Jones was in defiant mood after her Aston Villa Ladies team conceded twice in the closing minutes to lose 3-1 against Durham
Chloe Jones admitted Aston Villa Ladies were left devastated after a point was snatched from their grasp by two late Durham goals on Sunday – but the captain vowed her side will bounce back.
The hosts had looked more likely to grab a winner after Alice Hassall cancelled out Beth Hepple’s opener, but they were left empty handed when Zoe Ness struck in the 89th minute and Emily Roberts made it 3-1 in stoppage time.
Jones felt the final outcome was harsh on Villa, who’d shown their mettle to come back against third place Durham.
She said: “We are devastated and really frustrated because I think a fair result would have been 1-1. It’s a lack of focus and concentration for those last five minutes.
“I don’t think we deserved to go behind a minute before half-time so we did well to pick ourselves up and get ourselves back level.
“But then the last few minutes at the end let us down and I know the girls are absolutely gutted. But we are a strong team and we will pick ourselves back up.”
Villa stood up to the physical test presented by the visitors but both teams struggled to carve out clear-cut chance during a cagey first half.
Jodie Hutton headed just wide and Beth Merrick saw a shot well saved as the home side pushed for a winner after Hassall’s second half equaliser, and Jones says her team need to be more ruthless in front of goal.
“We probably created more chances but Durham were just more clinical with theirs,” she reflected.
“We need to stop other teams scoring but we also need to put more in the back of the net at the other end.
“I think it’s been the same most games this season – the scoresheet has rarely reflected what has actually happened on the pitch. But it’s the scoreline that counts.”
Due to Durham’s progress in the FA Cup, and a subsequent fixture clash, Aston Villa are next in action when they travel to Kings Langley FC to play Watford Ladies on 25 March.
