Richards: We gave it everything
Defender’s Durham review.
Jade Richards believes Villa Ladies’ character and belief came to the fore in Sunday’s dramatic 5-4 win over Durham.
The centre-back gave her side an early lead only for Zoe Ness’ hat-trick and Beth Hepple’s penalty to put the Wildcats 4-1 up in the final Spring Series match.
Richards then reduced the arrears on the hour.
Lucy Shepherd netted the goal her performance deserved with six minutes remaining before Maddy Cusack levelled and Alys Hinchcliffe struck a last-gasp winner to complete the turnaround.
Ever the professional defender, Richard was disappointed with the number of goals conceded but believed the result was the right one on the overall balance of play.
She said: “I’ve got mixed emotions to be honest.
“I felt we were the better side only to concede three goals in the first half, but we’ve shown the character in our side to come back the way we did.
“We came out for the second half wanting to score three goals to win the game.
"I gave away the penalty and it made our task harder.
“But our team has given literally everything until the last moment to win that game.
"You can see how much it meant to us from our celebrations at the end.
“I’ve tripled my goal tally for the season!
“We knew that if we continued to get the ball into the right areas we had a chance.”
