Richards: We Were Playing For Jones
Aston Villa Ladies lost out to Sheffield FC Ladies 4-3 on the final day of the Women's Super League Two season.
Jade Richards says Aston Villa Ladies were playing for captain Chloe Jones in the season finale against Sheffield FC Ladies on Sunday.
Trailing 4-1 at half-time, the home side battled back through Jodie Hutton and Beth Merrick before Richards struck the post with two minutes left.
The defender had scored the opening goal after just seven minutes – a header from a Jones corner – but she was more concerned about the team and their captain, who was playing her final career game, than herself.
She said: “I ended the season with a goal and I could have had another one – hit the post – but I don’t do it for me, I do it for these girls and we were trying to do it for CJ for her send-off.
“I’m sure she’ll be happy with the second half performance and that will live long in her memory. We appreciate everything she’s done for us.”
Richards and Jones have formed part of Villa’s backline for the majority of the season, giving the side a strong foundation.
Either side of a spell playing forÅland United in Finland, Jones has been a popular member of the Villa team and she lifted the FA Women’s Premier League Cup in 2013.
Richards said: “I’ve had the pleasure of playing with her in a few different spells and she’s been great.
“She’s a leader on the pitch, she sets the high standards that she wants from everyone to reach and she works well with the coaches in getting the messages down to the players.
“On and off the pitch, she’s a great person, a great individual and we can’t thank her enough for everything she’s done.”
Aston Villa Ladies will be playing from Boldmere St Michaels FC in the 2018/19 season.
